Opinions Story

About 77 percent of teen pregnancies are unplanned. In other words they are unwanted or have been occurred too soon. If female teens were able to access birth control without a parents consent, rates will eventually go down and less teen pregnancies will occur. With the use of birth control for female students in high school, it will not only prevent teen pregnancy but also offer other great benefits.
Most teen girls don't want to talk to their parents about sec or the idea of birth control at all because they feel uncomfortable.  I believe that female students at the starting age of sixteen should have access to birth control because it would make them more responsible and more aware of things. Also, many teens are afraid of being disowned by their parents when they find out they are being sexually active or even thinking of it. I know most parents don't want their daughter(s) being sexually active but you can't always rely on that theory, taking a bigger head step to actually prevent pregnancy won't stress everyone out as much.
If teenagers are prevented from getting contraceptive, teen pregnancies will increase more each year. There are several ways of getting on birth control, so a teen will have options that would make them feel most comfortable. Females have the option of taking pills everyday, Skyla which is a small device that gets placed in a females uterus, the birth control shot that gets injected in once every three months. With all these options, a female student can choose either or for what works for them best.
Although there are many ways of getting on birth control, all these options can be putting a female's health at risk which is why birth control is not 100% trustworthy.  Also, a lot of parents may not want to out their daughters health at risk because of this. With any type of birth control, it does not prevent any sexual transmitted diseases. When a female is on birth control using the everyday pill, it prevents the body from making hormones involved in ovulation and menstruation. When stopping, the body may take some time it to return to normal production of these hormones.
Although the most common use for birth control is to prevent pregnancies, there are several other uses that can benefit a female. Many young girls are actually prescribed birth control for irregular or absent menstrual periods, menstrual cramps, acne, PMS, and Polycystic ovary syndrome. Girls who are diagnosed with PCOS are often prescribed birth control to lower their hormone levels to regulate their menstrual periods.
All of these facts and good reasoning is why girls starting at the age of sixteen should be allowed to get prescribed birth control without parents consent. Girls shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable talking to parent(s) knowing they will be shut out, so going to the clinic will better up their options and taking control to get the help they need.

Earthquake Story

An earthquake rocked the San Francisco Bay area Monday morning. The quake struck at 8:12 a.m, with a building housing McHenry's Auto Supply at 2342 Plum St. partially collapsed, killing two people and injuring six others, according to  Jennifer Vu, a public information officer from the Hayward Fire Department.

“I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling. I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming start across the street” He said.

Hayward resident Mike Beamer, whose apartment is across the street from McHenry’s, said he felt a rolling motion that lasted for about 30 seconds, with a big jolt coming in the middle.

People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake, Gertz said.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, was under the Hayward Hills, according to Penny Gertz, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. Gertz called the quake a “strong one” and said it occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills.

Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake, Vu said.

Three of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to require hospitalization and were transported to Hayward General Hospital, according to Vu. She added the no other serious injuries have been reported in Hayward.

Names of the dead are being withheld pending notifications of families, Vu said.

Huntington Story

Janice Jones, 53 year old who lives in Barstow, California, had been shot in the right leg around 10 p.m on Wednesday. This is according to California Highway Patrol press liaison Tammy Rye.

Rye said Jones was eating pork chops in the back of her motor home, which was parked on Beach Boulevard near Highway 1, when her dog knocked her 9 mm handgun off a seat.

"I was in shock" stated Rye.

The weapon discharged when it hit the floor, and the bullet passed through Jones; leg and through the side of the vehicle, according to Rye.

“It could have been worse,” Rye said. “The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank.”

Jones was transported to Huntington Beach Hospital via ambulance and later was transported to Irvine Medical Center.

. "Jim Washington, a spokesperson for Huntington Beach Hospital, confirmed Jones was treated at the hospital but gave no additional information" Rye said.

Jones’ dog, a Pomeranian named Tombo, was placed in the care of the Huntington Beach Animal Control officers.

The dog seemed to be malnourished, according to Janet Ngo, one of the animal control officers, and had fresh cigarette burns on its forehead.

“It could have done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” Ngo said.

Ngo indicated that her office would explore filing animal abuse charges against Jones.

Rye said officers cited Jones for expired plates and the county’s district attorney’s office was considering whether to charge her in relation to the gun accident. Jones doesn’t have a permit for the gun, Rye said.

My First Interview

Answer the following questions on your blog in a post called Student of the Month Story.

Who - Jose Castillo
What - Won student of the Month
Where - At Bowie High school
When -Last week, on March 30th
Why -Was announced student of the month
How -it came all natural

On March 30th, 2016 of last week Jose Castillo was announced student of the month in his economics class at Bowie High school and was later interviewed. Many questions were asked to understand the reasoning behind of why he was chosen for student of the month. During the interview, Castillo described the kind of student he is and  what he did to get the award.

Castillo has always had it in him to do his best and accomplish anything and everything, sometimes without even trying because that is his mindset.

"Even though this comes all natural to Jose, he deserves to be recognized for all his accomplishments" Principle Mr. King states the day the award was handed out to Castillo.

Castillo feels he deserves the award with the additional plus of his excellent grades.

"I'm not a hard worker honestly, but my grades have always been perfect" Castillo mentions

Many students today go crazy over the fact that extra credit can bump up grades, but Castillo never took that advantage because he doesn't need too.

"No need to do extra credit if I already get 100's and pretty much every assignment and exams." Castillo states his opinion on extra credit.

Castillo never got complimented on his work besides from his parents, and of course himself.

"It's always been myself or my parents that compliment my work, I guess everyone else already knows I know what I'm capable of so they feel no need to do so" he said. "I don't need anyone to compliment my work, never will I need anyone to do so."

It's common for students to be tardy here and there to class, but for some it might be consistent.

"I'm either always late during the work or 5 minutes early, there is no in between" he said.

Students in his class describe him as an independent worker who is friendly and very laid back.

"Jose is probably the coolest guy in class, he gets all his work done and is friends with everyone. Although sometimes he keeps to himself." Bryan from economics expresses his opinion about Castillo.

People from school, who see Castillo walking to class and hang out with him at lunch say he's different than in class. He keeps more to himself, but is still friendly here and there.

"I'm the Kanye West of school." Castillo said about himself.

Castillo is aiming for a bigger award by the end of the school year.

"I'm glad I got student of the month award, but the student of the year seems a lot cooler, and that's my focus right now.
